If you are looking for a nice vegan option for dinner, look no further.
Located on South Beretania St., "Tane" is an izakaya, or a Japanese style bar/restaurant that serves a variety of vegan dishes!
When something is vegan, I always imagine it to be not so palatable or satisfying.
But, unique and carefully seasoned dishes from Tane will change your mind.
Every dish we ordered had a bold yet smooth taste, and even my boyfriend (who is a meat lover) didn't mind eating something vegan.
We got so full after the dessert, but I felt less guilty knowing everything was plant-based.
I often get upset stomach after dining out because of all the fatties, sodium, and whatnot, but surprisingly, I didn't feel bloated the next morning despite all the fried dishes we had.
Gyoza ($9)

The first dish we ordered was gyoza (potstickers).
It has veggies and tofu as filling, giving a nice meat-like texture.
The wrap was crispy while the inside was hot and juicy - I think adding tofu to the filling really makes it close to non-vegan gyoza.
Each piece is relatively small, so it's a perfect appetizer to share.
Shizen Shiitake ($12)

(Middle)
Fried shiitake mushroom with tofu stuffing and matcha salt.
It is so crispy but they somehow managed to keep the tofu soft!
It's filling since they are deep fried, but they also come in small pieces.
We still had room for other dishes after sharing it between 2 people hehe
The brown sauce is sweet shoyu (soy sauce), which tasted like unagi sauce.
If you like mushroom, this dish is a must!
Ewa ($17)

Enoki mushroom tempura roll with matcha salt - it was so colorful and pretty😍
We couldn't decide on which rolls to get, and this was one of the recommendations from our server.
It's topped with avocado and lemon slices, making it refreshing and easy to eat, although the enoki is deep fried.
The pink sauce is beets aioli, but I couldn't taste the distinct earthiness beets often have.
So don't worry if you don't like beets, it's not bitter at all!
I wondered what the fish egg looking thing on the top was, since they can't use tobiko...
The menu said "seaweed pearls," but I am not sure what it was haha
The Wedge ($16)

(Front)
Another roll recommended by our server - tempura roll with tofu.
It's topped with scallions, chili, sesame, and spicy aioli, so it was a little spicy.
The aioli sauce and sweet shoyu reminded me of spicy poke haha
Unfortunately, the rice was a little too mushy for me, but I wasn't sure if that's the recipe they use or it was just that one time🤔
Still a great roll if you are looking for a spicy poke style roll :)
Yuba Nigiri ($7)

I've never had a chance to eat yuba (bean curd skin) in Hawaii, since that's not readily available here...
Yuba is a by-product of soy milk production, and it has chewy/silky texture.
I used to love yuba in Japan, so couldn't help but order them.
It goes so well with yuzu-flavored shoyu and wasabi, and it was nice to have something not deep fried.
The pieces are fairly big and satisfying.
They also have other fun nigiri items such as mango, tomato, asparagus, and more!
Apple Layered Crumble Cake

Last but not least...the dessert!
It seems like they only serve one type of dessert per night, and it changes quite often.
We got their apple crumble cake, and to be honest, it was one of the best dishes I had that night🍰
The cake itself is not overly sweet, and molasses and vegan cream cheese on top give it a nice creamy texture.
Paired with fresh fruits, it was really refreshing too.
I'm (super) lactose intolerant so truly appreciate vegan desserts since they are difficult to find at normal restaurants.
I forgot to take a picture of the interior, but it's modern and somewhat classy.
Our server was friendly, and she explained the menu thoroughly after finding out that it was our first time there.
It's a perfect restaurant for a special occasion or date night, in my opinion.
I would highly encourage you to check them out, even if you're not vegan!
Thanks for reading :)
